Hi again,
well, i hear the problem with the GUI license quite often but i think the
construction is not correct. "Non-Commercial" sounds like "Hey, you must not use
this product for your company where you make money by working with the GUI" -
this is _NOT_ the construction which is intended by Open-Xchange Inc. We've
already published our point of view for this term as it is not fully clarified
by the creativecommons itself, take a look at this:
http://www.open-xchange.com/footer/legal_notice/creative_commons_faq.html [
http://www.open-xchange.com/footer/legal_notice/creative_commons_faq.html ]
"Noncommercial: Individual, not-for-profit and for-profit users may copy, share,
display and use the work for internal purposes -- and the derivative works
based upon it -- but not for external commercial purposes [i.e., users may not
resell the work nor offer the work for a rent or subscription nor offer the work
in combination with advertising without a formal contract with Open-Xchange,
Inc"
This makes clear, that non-commercial use includes using at a company which
works with the cc-nc part of the project. It prohibits resale of the licensed
components, not the usage. For example, you are allowed to use the software for
commercial purposes as long as you do not sell it to anybody else, but you are
allowed to sell your services for it. One very clear example of commercial usage
is selling the software as a service to a customer who pays for the use like a
hosting company does. That's it - and i do not believe most of the community
wants to run their own hosting company which makes money by offering the cc-nc
parts.

Post by Martin NowackHi Martin,
yes, you're really active but let me state my opinion, what I think is missing.
To make it short, it is the "wrong" license for the frontend.
I think, the frontend for ox is for many people the crucial part.
There doesn't really exist a way to access ox. Yes you can use the
features per webdav, but they are often not working reliable for your
client PIM software or they lack of needed features, this is not your
fault.
I don't know the current status of the Outlook connector, but this is
commercial.
Which other ways you've got to access the data?
The frontend is the only one, which provides all features of ox. But
the non-commercial CC license prevent people to develop it further or
make real additions. And to develop a frontend from scratch to access
the features of ox, I think it is easier to use an already existing
solution.
Please keep in mind you make an enterprise product, to enhance
communication including the management of information between
different people. So there are several usage scenarios, a big oss
community, they often better use other solutions like a wiki, mailing
list or forum, because they are loosely coupled.
Small and medium-sized or large business are an other scenario. But
the can't use it - non-commercial CC. Or they buy it from you - but
this is not community. The development of the own, like state above
...
And for two or three people, I can't think for a real usage scenario.
Maybe in this situation OX is quit overkill.
So why should community members take action or be part of this project?
The ox-backend is like a good engine, but if you don't have a car
around it, it is quite useless.
This should be no blame, because I think your product is really good
and I also like your enhancements.
A possible solution maybe you can provide the frontend under an other
license and provide several enhancements as commercial plugins.
Like stated, this is my opinion.
Greetings
Martin
Post by Braun, MartinHi Matthew,
OX development (by the company) is more active than ever, but the community is
not. Thats nothing i want to blame anybody for, but it's still a fact that most
communication at the forums is about getting something, not about participation
for development or supporting the project. This is why it is that quiet here. I
think me made major progress at the software development and software quality as
well as community dedication but this is no one-way-road, the project will win
much more if more dedication by the community would be present.

Post by Matthew Macdonald-WallaceSo is this list a reflection on the status of OX development? Has the
project Stalled?
I've noticed that there's been about six posts in the last few days on
the forums and I'm trying to gague whether to continue using OX or look
at alternatives that are more actively developed.
Cheers,
M.

hey i'm still on this list :)
fyi I posted here too on May 29, 2007 - no posts since then.
i think this list is dead. nobody uses ist. you have to go to the web
forums (*yuk*)
Post by Matthew Macdonald-WallaceHi all,
I signed up to this list and the "users" list a few weeks back and I've
noticed that there is minimal traffic. Is this just because people are
away on holiday, or is this list generally this quiet?
Whilst I'm typing, does anyone know what happened to the
Evolution-Plugin of OX, I've seen numerous people advising that it would
be a good idea, however I've seen very little evidence of any work being
done. If someone could let me know the status, that would be great as I
may be able to help out with testing etc.
Cheers,
Matt.
